Frighteningly we have just had the longest day of the year. We’ve missed sooooo much golf, amongst other things, that its great to be able to get some social golf played, but more importantly some competitive golf. I’ve just seen the scores from the first couple of competitions and you can certainly tell the people who’ve been out practicing over the last few weeks………..there’s been some great scoring.
Everyone still has to be sensible and adhere to social distancing, even if it is only one metre (as I write), together with high regard to personal hygiene of washing hands and sanitizing. I’m sure we’re all well aware of this by now.
For Members, guests and visitors the course is being presented in fantastic condition and this should be enhanced by the installation of our new irrigation system and the ongoing work of our greenkeepers. We have had a good number of visitors and they all seem to have good things to say about not just the course, but the set up we have, with Clem welcoming them to the club. I can’t say enough about his work since our return. Well done Clem and Val. We are also expecting our new starters hut, patio area (courtesy of Shaun Stokoe) and a large delivery of hardcore (courtesy of Mark Short) for the start of work to some of the paths.
Work is also close to being finished in the clubhouse with a new bar, widened doorways and disabled persons toilets and lift.
The team have unfortunately had their season curtailed early as the league was cancelled. We have played a League Cup tie away to South Moor which we lost 3-2, and a friendly at Hobson which we drew 3.5 – 3.5. Our next game on Tuesday 30th June is again an away cup tie against South Moor in The Clark Cup.
It has been great to see full entries in the competitions, especially greater numbers playing in the doubles. On the competition front it is still my intention to run my Captains Day on Saturday 25th July. At present it will be a golf day but hopefully we will be able to have a few refreshments either on the course, clubhouse or patio area depending on circumstances. Unfortunately, I’ve had to cancel the evening entertainment ‘Dog in a Box’ but I’m hoping to be able to sort something later in the year.
Although we are just a couple of weeks into our ‘new’ season I feel there are many positive vibes around the club and I hope it will be a successful time for everyone connected.
